loulu
(2023)
Original design celebrating the loulu (endemic Hawaiian palms) and the conservationists that work so hard to protect them. Loulu were historically widespread across the Hawaiian archipelago but currently face major declines due to the loss of native habitat, seed predation, introduced species, and lethal damage from invasive Coconut Rhinoceros beetles. Conservation efforts include fencing to exclude introduced animals, rat control, weeding, propagation in nurseries and botanical gardens, and cryopreservation.
Line from the oli composed by Hiʻilei Kawelo, Kapua Kawelo, and Kaia Kong for the Oʻahu Army Natural Resources Program. Design dedicated to the program and its work with Pritchardia kaalae in the Waiʻanae Mountains.
